We want everyone to be the best they can be throughout the recruitment process; if you require any additional adjustments please let us know.
The Role
We are looking for a smart, ambitious, driven Data and Privacy Legal Counsel to assist with a broad range of legal and compliance matters relating to data and privacy at Dojo. You will need to hit the ground running from the start, so we are looking for self-starters who relish that kind of challenge and enjoy a fast paced environment.
You will be a key member of our group Legal team, reporting directly into our Senior Legal Counsel and DPO and working closely with the broader Legal, Compliance, Risk, Information Security and Data teams, alongside the wider business in London, Bristol, Hull and Dublin.
What you will do…
-
Work closely with our Senior Legal Counsel and DPO to advise our business on a broad range of data and privacy matters, including:
-
advising on data protection impact assessment and novel uses of personal data;
-
supporting to mature and scale our existing processes relating to data subject rights;
-
maintaining our policies and procedures relating to data and privacy, including the record of processing activities and retention schedule; and
-
reviewing and negotiating data protection agreements and standard contractual clauses and related matters relating to international data transfers.
-
Advise on areas of law relating to data and privacy, including the market practice and regulation of artificial intelligence and machine learning (including GPT) and technology licensing.
-
Support our international expansion, assisting our Dublin team to understand the application of EU GDPR and local law requirements to our EU business as it scales (with support from external counsel).
-
Provide product counselling to our Consumer Products team on various matters, including the Dojo for Consumer application and related services.
-
Support the broader Legal team on commercial contract negotiations where required.
What you will bring…
-
Qualified lawyer (1-3 years PQE as a guide) with depth and breadth of experience in data and privacy matters, gained in private practice from a top law firm, and ideally with some in-house or in-house-secondment experience as well.
-
A pragmatic approach to the application of data and privacy law is essential - you will recognise that the application of this area of law is inherently risk-based and want to support our business in making decisions within its risk tolerance.
-
Desire to be involved in both the operationalisation of data and privacy law and its theoretical application.
-
Previous experience advising on adjacent areas of law such as the regulation of artificial intelligence would be beneficial but is not essential.
-
Natural curiosity for and desire to be involved in a wide range of general legal matters affecting our business, including commercial contracts and litigation matters.
-
Interest in working with an e-money and payments business; ideally one focused on merchant acquiring, and an enthusiasm for innovation in technology.
-
A team player with great people skills and a good sense of humour who can effectively and efficiently collaborate, building relationships with colleagues throughout the business.
-
An analytical mind able to “see” the complexities of data and privacy matters but then simplify issues for others.
-
A pragmatic, commercial and creative approach to problem solving and decision-making.
-
Highest standards of ethics and professional integrity.
About Dojo
We launched Dojo in 2019 to address business owners’ pain points across the UK. Since then, we’ve seen incredible growth as a scaling fintech, welcoming over 150,000 customers and growing the Dojo team to 1,000+ people across five locations. In that time, we’ve also introduced Dojo Virtual Queues & Bookings and the Dojo restaurant finder app, formerly known as WalkUp and loved by 1,000 restaurants and 750,000 diners.
Today, we work towards our mission to empower businesses to thrive in the Experience Economy by creating the tools and technology that turn transactions into meaningful relationships. For our business customers, that means fast funding, the fastest payments, smart integrations, and efficient virtual queues & bookings - all with instant insight across the board. For diners, that means getting seated at their favourite restaurants with just a couple of taps on the Dojo app. Whether it’s for busy business owners or hungry diners, every Dojo product is built to address real customer pain points by our dedicated teams in London, Bristol, Hull and Belfast.
Our values
At Dojo, we’re curious . We have an insatiable desire to learn and innovate. And we’re relentless . We persevere even when it’s easier not to. But, we’re nothing without our customers, who drive everything we do. From day one, Dojo was built on real customer pain points and every one of us is customer-obsessed.
Our way of working
Dojo has adopted a set of shared principles with the aim of increasing in-person collaboration and amplifying our ‘Customer First’ values. We encourage our employees to meet in-person over virtual meetings, and our communication is mostly asynchronous. Unlike most other businesses, we are intentionally avoiding a rules-based approach, and each team is empowered to make the arrangements that work best for their success. The answer to every scenario which tests these principles is: We trust you to use your judgement responsibly, in the best interest of our customers.
