Diversity, equity, and inclusion at Dojo

From local bakeries to well-known eateries, Dojo payments serve over 140,000 places across the UK.

And something that’s fundamental to creating relevant, innovative products at Dojo is to build teams to reflect the diversity of the businesses we serve.

Our drive to improve diversity, equity, and inclusion is closely linked to helping employees thrive and innovating for better customer experiences.

If you care about your work, you’re curious, and you think customer-first, you have a place at Dojo.

To make sure you’re the best you can be throughout the recruitment process, let us know if you need any extra adjustments to help you thrive.

The Role:

2024 brings ambitious growth targets for our "scaling machine" – the Growth Tribe. With all hands on deck, we aim to increase the number of merchants we onboard each month and expand our global footprint. Our underwriting team is crucial in creating a frictionless signup journey for new merchants, a vital element of our success.

As we continue our expansion into Europe, we are establishing a new underwriting team in Milan, focusing specifically on the Italian market. This team will work closely with our existing Risk teams in the UK and Spain but will operate as a new, dedicated unit acting as a shield against fraud, financial crime, and credit risks. Given our rapid growth, you'll leverage your expertise in financial and non-financial analysis experience to ensure applicants meet Dojo’s risk appetite.

Working alongside a skilled team of fast and thorough decision-makers, you'll help establish the in-market underwriting department, engage proactively with internal stakeholders and clients to manage and mitigate risk, and support Dojo's ongoing growth and expansion.

What You Will Do:

  • Risk Assessments: Conduct comprehensive risk assessments of prospective Italian clients by analysing financial statements, reviewing KYC documentation, and identifying and mitigating potential financial crime risks.

  • Application Assessments: Assess new customer applications and requests for additional products/services that increase potential risk or credit exposure, all within agreed SLAs.

  • Credit Evaluation: Evaluate the creditworthiness of prospective customers, considering factors such as financial strength, financial MI and cash flows, payment history, collateral, industry trends, and other non-financial factors.

  • KYC and KYB Verification: Perform Know Your Customer (KYC) and Know Your Business (KYB) verification steps, including identity verification, business verification, ownership verification and compliance checks to ensure adherence to regulatory requirements.

  • Acquiring Risks: Understand the underlying acquiring risks in a wide range of complex propositions across various clients, sectors, and product offerings.

  • Stakeholder Engagement: Proactively engage with commercial teams and clients to maximise onboarding opportunities, manage case escalations, and advocate for the risk and underwriting function.

  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work closely with the Compliance, Financial Crime, Legal and other Risk teams, addressing high risk applications, negotiating and reviewing bespoke contracts and security arrangements, and ensuring robust risk management practices across all functions.

  • Policy Development: Participate in creating, developing, and documenting policies and processes across the underwriting function, identifying areas for improvement and making recommendations for change.

  • Industry Trends: Stay informed on industry trends, market conditions, and regulatory changes that may impact the boarding journey or customer risk profiles.

What You Will Bring:

  • Experience: Proven experience in an underwriting or credit risk role within a financial institution, with strong financial analysis skills and a deep understanding of the Italian market.

  • Education: Degree-level education or equivalent experience in credit risk, underwriting, or a similar role within the financial services sector in the Italian market.

  • Knowledge: Understanding of Credit, Fraud, and AML risk specifically within the Payments Industry, including knowledge of card scheme rules, industry regulations, and the chargeback process.

  • Skills: Strong problem-solving, negotiation, decision-making, and multi-tasking skills.

  • Communication: Excellent communication skills, capable of articulating complex underwriting decisions to internal and external stakeholders.

  • Customer Focus: A customer-focused approach with the ability to balance risk management and customer satisfaction.

  • Collaboration: Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment, focusing on continuous improvement and achieving shared goals.

  • Development: Motivation to grow and develop your skills with a passion for innovation and driving change within the payments industry.

  • Languages: Business fluency in English and Italian.

Dojo from the get-go

First launch was back in 2009. So with over 15 years in the payments industry, we’ve got a story to tell.

Dojo is built to soothe customer and consumer pain points across the world for over 140,000 customers.

And today, there’s over 1,200 of us in multiple locations across the UK, Ireland, Spain, Italy, and France.

Our mission is to empower businesses to thrive in the experience economy by creating the tools and tech that turns transactions into meaningful relationships.

We do that through sophisticated EPOS payments integrations, fast transactions, hospitality bookings, and a strong consumer restaurant app.

Question: what’s curious, relentless, and customer obsessed?

If you’re keen to know the answer, you’re a third of the way to meeting our Dojo values.

If the following speak to you, let’s talk:

  • You’re curious. You have a real desire to learn and create.
  • You’re relentless. You keep going even when it’s easier not to.
  • You’re customer-obsessed. You know how important customers are to what you do.

Dojo home and away

We love collaboration. We have offices across Europe – that takes some dynamism.

Long-distance calls are a must, but we’ve always valued in-person work when it’s possible, especially meetings. We aim for asynchronous communication when we can though.

Don’t like rules? Nor do we. We avoid top-down policies – it’s all about teams having the power to fuel their success.

At Dojo, you’re trusted to judge what you see and make the call in the best interest of our customers.
